In rural Makwanpur students often have to walk up to three hours to and from school.
In response to a direct request from the students themselves, we paid to have an old school building converted into a hostel allowing them to stay safely overnight, have support to complete homework tasks and have a hot meal.
The hostel was opened in the Autumn of 2019, taking in both boys and girls in separate dormitories.
Unfortunately due to the Covid pandemic it had to close again in April 2020.
During the months it was open it was well used and the head teacher thanked NEPAL-ease for this valuable facility, which has benefited the students, improving exam results and facilitating peer support and mentorship.
The following short video shows the remote location of the school and interviews some of the students who were explaining why the hostel was important to them.
As you will see it is mostly in Nepali but the head teacher is speaking in English during the last 2-3minutes.
We hope that even with the language barrier, you will enjoy seeing the students, their environment and the challenges they face daily to access an education.
On 1/05/21 the hostel opened again to students and there are currently twenty students using this facility whilst they study for National Board exams.
Update from the headmaster of Lekali Basiphant Secondary School:
“The hostel is now back in use and accommodating twenty 10th grade students (eleven girls and nine boys)
They are very grateful to 'Nepal-ease' for funding the students Hostel. The students are currently preparing for National Board exams which will be held from June 13th for eight days. Because of the hostel facility, students are saving at least five hours walking to and from school. They are very happy. They are taking breakfast, lunch dinner at school canteen.
On behalf of the school family, I would like to express sincere thanks and congratulate "Nepal-ease" for making this project come true from last year. The obstacles recently caused by the global COVID-19, pandemic to the school has caused unmeasurable lose in academic performance of our students but due to continuous and untiring effort of school Management committee and entire teaching staff and our valued parents, we are able to run school hostel smoothly.
Finally, We wish that the project further strengthens the relationship between Nepal and UK and the friendship of people in the two countries. We along with our students are eagerly waiting for "Nepal Ease" team to visit to our school and try our best to fulfill the concept of caring and sharing and do our humanitarian need base activities especially for the needy students. Thanks for your kind co-operation and hope that your constructive support and suggestion in the days to come.”
